The representative

What is the representative?

The representative is in a sense like the token minority. Only the representative has to carry the weight of making sure to give off positive vibes for fear that doing a single negative thing can affirm to a white person the stereotypes they may or most likely believe in.

The representative can also be someone you find in a classroom or even work setting, that one single person who has to carry the weight of being that one and only and having to speak up in defense of their race, or worse, to explain and give their insight.

Think of it like this. To some people out there, if they only looked at one blog on the biracial experience, they may hinge on that person being the representative aka spokesperson on being biracial because they are biracial and would have expertise in that field.

The problem with the representative is that it puts a burden and extreme heavy weight to ensure one does not blame their race for anything. In fact, its downright impossible. If someone easily lets the action of a few blacks ruin their perception an causes them to not see them as individuals, then chances are they never saw blacks as individuals and nothing you do to disprove that the stereotypes are universal will change their minds.

The problem with being the representative for your race in a classroom setting just to get one's experience is that everyone's experience is different. one cannot truly speak for everyone. I do not speak for all biracials, I speak for myself, what you see in this blog is based on my personal views. If one wanted to know more about the biracial experience, I would suggest them to branch out and not just rely one blog. I am often more hard on white people than I am black people, because I share a fate with blacks because in society I am seen as black, sometimes my fate can be worse when the discovery of being mixed is made. Also I am harder on whites because they have the power in this country, they are the majority, and they are the ones guilty for the horridness of American history.

There are some biracials, such as Tiffany of Mulatto Diaries, who is often more harder on blacks than she is whites.

Different experiences for everyone. In order to get a true idea of a race, you have to look at all the angles. In a sense, its like doing a research study. One person cannot be the representative, even if that one person echoes most of the beliefs often found within their race.

The representative is a position of high and unattainable expectations.
